St. Peter's Episcopal Church

History of St. Peter's

St. Peter’s was established in 1848 and has had a deep involvement in Brenham since its beginning. The first and second church buildings were located in downtown Brenham. The current worship and classroom building was completed in 1965. The pews, altar and furnishings were moved from the old church building to the new one and needed items were built to match the older pieces. The current organ, a restored 1921 Pilcher organ, produces a sound worthy of Episcopal worship and is also an amazing sight to behold with its combination of metal and wooden pipes.

The “new” parish hall was completed in 1986. The Columbarium garden was completed in 2004 and the house and property at the corner of Day St. and Hillcrest was purchased in 2005 with the intention of using the property to provide “front door” parking for the congregation.

St. Peter’s has had a number of rectors in its long history - 16 to be exact! - with Father S. Moylen Byrd holding the record with a tenure of 40 years. Our most recent Rector was The Rev. Cecilia Smith who served St. Peter's from 1997 to 2007. She recently left St. Peter's to start serving the Diocese of Texas. St. Peter's is now in a search process for a new Rector.

The parish has hosted numerous community events and has served as a meeting place for many organizations of the Diocese of Texas.

When the current facility was built, it sat at the edge of Brenham. The parish is now located at the growing side of the city and, as such, is becoming aware of new opportunities for ministry. Many St. Peter’s members are active in community organizations and events. Members of the parish live throughout Washington County with a few coming in from neighboring counties.

St. Peter’s was one of the founding parishes of the Diocese of Texas which was established in 1849.
